Northwind: API is down

API (https://api.northwind.example/health) is failing. Error: timeout.

The notification on a phone, with made-up names. The recovery notification follows and says how long the outage lasted.

Setting it up

  1. Install Pushover and sign in. Your user key is at the top of pushover.net; a group key reaches several people.
  2. At pushover.net/apps/build, create an application and copy its API token.
  3. In StatOSS, open Account, Alerts, choose Pushover under "Add a destination", paste the token and the key, tick "Repeat until acknowledged" if you want it, tick the pages whose alerts go there, and add it.
  4. Press "Send a test" next to it.

Pushover is on Hobby ($4 a month) and Pro. Email alerts are on every plan, Free included. The pricing page has the rest.

The messages count against your application's allowance at Pushover. The token is stored encrypted and not shown again.

Priorities and the repeat

Down alerts and still-down notices go at high priority, which sounds through quiet hours. Recovery, slow and test alerts go at normal priority. With "Repeat until acknowledged", the alert that a monitor went down goes at emergency priority: Pushover sounds it every minute for up to three hours until someone acknowledges it in the app, and the recovery alert stops the repeats.

When an alert goes out

One alert per change of state: when a monitor goes down, when it turns slow, and when it is back, with the time, the reason, and how long it was out. A monitor counts as down after two failed checks in a row, each confirmed by a second server on another network; a single failed check sends nothing. A repeat interval sends a "still down" notice every so many minutes while an outage lasts, and nothing is sent during a maintenance window. Every kind of monitor alerts the same way: a website, an API, a port, a certificate, a cron job.
